History

Image by serkangul.comThe 4th Avenue Rug gallery only sells handmade rugs! For centuries rugs have been made , sold, traded and traveled over the silk rug which spanned from Turkey to China with the different cultures influencing the patterns and symbols and colors of the rug. According to this theory the art of carpet-weaving in Iran is at least 3500 years old.
The dyes used to create the coloring are all from plants, roots and other natural substances. Subtle variations in the same color sometimes occur, particularly in older carpets or those woven by nomadic tribes. Persian carpets are traditionally known for their tremendous variety in design, color, size, and weave. Moreover, they are known for the uniqueness of each and every rug produced.

Persian rugs have been around for many centuries and they have always been considered a form of art and also as a means of investment. Other countries like India, Pakistan, China, and many others make rugs as well, but when we talk about Persian carpets, we are referring to rugs that are made in Iran and that are handmade. I say handmade, because there has been an unfortunate trend lately to copy real Persian rugs by others countries, who then mass-produce them using machine technology. A real Persian carpet is handmade in Iran and only natural wool and fibers are used in the process. One of the reasons, why Persian rugs are so valuable, is because they are handmade by individual weavers, rather than in factories. Also, Persian rugs are made of all natural wool and silk and do not have synthetic silk or wool.

Doing business since 1950

The Jodiri family has been in the rug business since around 1950 in Tehran. When Jodiri opened the store, in the Tehran Bazaar he brought with him his expertise, especially of Tabriz rugs. Mr. Joadiri , Sr. has been dividing his time between our Tehran operational headquarters and here in San Diego. He especially enjoys his time with granddaughter Melika, the next generation of the family.

ArmanArman began his American enterprise with a whole sale rug importing business here in southern California. As the long-standing embargo was lifted a retail location was begun here on 4th Avenue. His carefully trained eye and years of practical knowledge can be seen in every detail of the 4th Avenue Rug Gallery’s vast collection. Each piece was chosen to be the best available from that region, many bought directly from the loom. His expertise in rug cleaning, appraisal, and evaluation are to be commended as well. He would be glad to help you in your rug selection and his hospitality is well known in the industry.
